Guildhall Christmas Lunches 2017

London Toastmaster at Guildhall Christmas Lunches 2017

During the festive season, I acted as Toastmaster in the City of London’s beautiful and historic Guildhall for the first of three Corporation staff’s Christmas lunches. The other two follow in sequential days. This way 1,800 staff attend covering all departments such as today’s - Barbican, Police, Schools, Surveyors, Built Environment. I have acted at these lunches for more than ten years. Great fun with a measure of formality.

DAY TWO : More Christmas Hats

Day two of The Christmas lunches at Guildhall and some of the best Christmas hats which include Santa’s sleigh, Battle of Britain Spitfires and a swan. The departments represented on this day were Chamberlains, Open Spaces, Central Criminal Court, City Solicitors, Children’s and Community Services.

Chatham House Prize Ceremony 2015

The London Toastmaster at the Chatham House Prize 2015

I was privileged to be Toastmaster at the 2015 Chatham House Prize ceremony, presented by HRH The Princess Royal to Dr Joanne Liu, President of Médecins Sans Frontières.

The photographs show:

  1. I remember our conversation was friendly but the picture suggests otherwise..
  2. Acting as Master of Ceremonies
  3. Dr Joanne Liu made a beautiful acceptance speech which honoured those of her colleagues who were killed and injured at the hospital in Kunduz and those who lost their lives during the Ebola crisis.
  4. This is why we Toastmasters wear red, I am reminded by my colleague Geoff Harris.

Interview at Radio Chelsea and Westminster

Radio Chelsea and Westminster

I was at Chelsea and Westminster hospital Radio being interviewed by good friend Anna Pangbourne and congratulate her on running a lively and interesting show. Somewhat ironic that I am here again just twelve hours after admitting myself to A&E having fallen off a stage the previous night in uniform in front of hundreds with a gash in my arm needing stitches. But hey, couldn't be in a better place or in safer hands. Lucky me. Amazing NHS and caring staff.

Asian Hindu Wedding held at Marriot Grosvenor Square London

Asian Toastmaster at Hindu held at Wedding Marriot Grosvenor Square London

Richard Birtchnell is The Asian Wedding Toastmaster

Privileged as always to participate in a Hindu wedding celebration. At the Marriott Grosvenor Square. Working alongside Veer Events, Mahraj Vaisnava, DJ Krash at Devine Music, harpist Melissa Parmar, photographer Dino Jeram, and videographer Chris Jolly.

Photos include:

  • The happy couple, Amish and Hatal
  • Family group photos after the ceremony
  • If you didn't know it, the swastika was originally an Indian religious icon and still today a sacred symbol in Hinduism. Even the word 'swastika' is Sanskrit for 'prosperity and well being'.
  • Creative arrangement of reception cocktails
  • The game of 'Koda Kodi' played by the couple whereby they search for a ring in opaque coloured liquid and whoever finds it first is deemed to be the 'ruler' of the household. The priest will adjudicate and organise the best of three or five attempts until the bride comes out on top. But of course!
  • The 'Ace of Spades' Champagne may be as expensive as the cake! Pure indulgence. Sheer luxury.
  • The Best Man organises a flash mob to entertain couple
  • Strictly the first dance. Unrepeatable. Then it's a non-stop party to the end after a day of celebration which had begun at 8am
